Most schools will work out a payment plan so you can put down a down payment when you begin, and then pay off the tuition over the course of your class.

FAQ SR22 Insurance: California SR22 Insurance in Alameda County

In order to obtain a restricted license so you can drive to work, school and your DUI classes, you must show proof of California SR22 insurance, along with the your court papers, at the Department of Motor Vehicles. SR22 insurance is not a policy. An SR22 is a certificate that proves you maintain the minimum amount of coverage required by the state of California if you have been convicted of a DUI or another offense that resulted in the suspension of your license. To answer questions you may have, we compiled the following list of frequently asked questions for California SR22 insurance.

1.) How do I obtain an SR22?

Your first step in obtaining an SR22 is to contact your insurance carrier and ask if they will provide an SR22 certification for you. Not all insurance companies offer the high risk policies that are required for SR22s. You may need to search for an insurance carrier that specializes in high risk policies. You can expect to pay about three to five times the premiums of a standard insurance policy for your high risk SR22 policy.

2.) How do I file the SR22 paperwork?

Once you have obtained your high risk policy, your insurance company will file the SR22 with the state on your behalf. You not let your policy lapse. If you do, the insurance carrier notifies the state and your license is suspended.

3.) How long will I need to maintain SR22 certification?

Generally, you need to meet SR22 requirements for a minimum of three years. However, the judge may mandate a longer period of time, particularly if you have been convicted of multiple DUIs.

4.) Do I need to get my SR22 before I can obtain my restricted license?

Yes! You will need to show proof of insurance, along with the SR22 certification and your court papers, at the DMV in order to obtain your restricted license. When you are shopping for your high risk policy, be sure to ask the agent when you will receive proof of SR22 coverage. Some carriers will send the documents to you electronically, but some mail them.
