Frequently Asked Questions About SR22 Insurance in Los angeles County

1. Who Needs a Los Angeles SR22 Policy?

Los Angeles drivers who have been convicted of a DUI, driving on a suspended or revoked license, or driving without insurance must obtain a California SR22 insurance before they can get back on the road. Additionally, compliant insurance is a necessary requirement for obtaining a restricted drivers license during the probation period. You may also be required to carry an SR22 compliant insurance policy if you were involved in an accident while you were not insured or under-insured or if you were deemed a negligent operator by collecting too many points on your driver's license. The most common reason people in Los Angeles County need SR22 coverage is because of a DUI or wet reckless conviction. Breathe Easy Insurance Solutions offers affordable SR22 policies and is committed to getting you back behind the wheel.

2. What Exactly Is an SR22 Insurance Policy?

An SR22 is a document that confirms you carry appropriate coverage as specified by California state law. The SR22 is not insurance itself, but rather a certificate that your insurance carrier files for you with the California DMV. The certificate confirms that you are financially responsible and covered in the event of an accident. Note that you and your vehicle are not covered by liability insurance. Liability insurance covers the other people and property when you are in an accident.

3. How Long Will I need an SR22 in LA County?

In most cases, you will be required to maintain an SR22 on file with the DMV for three years. However, if you are convicted of multiple DUI offenses or other serious driving offenses within 10 years, you may be required to maintain an SR22 on file for a longer period of time.

4. How Much Will a Los Angeles County SR22 Cost?

The cost of an SR22 compliant policy is based on your location, your driving history and age, and the insurance company that carries your policy. Costs will vary, but generally, an insurance policy with an SR22 attachment will be more costly than a standard auto insurance policy. The estimated cost of the high-risk policy that is required for an SR22 will be three to five times the cost of a standard liability policy. In addition, your insurance company will charge a fee to file the SR22 form with the DMV.

5. How do I Get a Restricted License in Los Angeles County?

The California DMV will usually issue a license for a first-time DUI conviction if you enroll in a state-approved Los Angeles DUI school, file an SR22 with the DMV and pay the associated fees. The fees are $15 for the restricted licenses and $125 for the reissue fee. For second and subsequent offenses, the DMV will require an ignition interlock device installed in your car, in addition, the aforementioned fees and requirements.

6. Will I Need To File an SR22 If I Move to Another State?

Though some states do not require the SR22 filing, most states do. If you file in California, however, your SR22 is only valid in the state of California. If you move to another state that requires the SR22, you must obtain a policy and file with that state when you arrive. If you move to a state that does not require the SR22 filing, you must obtain liability insurance with limits equal to or greater than the limits required for California. You can then provide proof of coverage to the California DMV, and they will release your SR22.
