Ohio SR22 INSURANCE

Reinstating Driving Privileges with an SR-22 Bond

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (Ohio BMV) requires you to carry minimum-limit liability insurance.  An SR-22/Bond may be required under a number of circumstances such as when your license is suspended for Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol (OVI).  The SR-22 Insurance Bond certifies that you have the minimum-limit liability insurance required by state law.

In Ohio, minimum-limit liability insurance coverage is:

  •         $25,000 bodily injury
  •         $50,000 total bodily injury
  •         $25,000 property damage

An Sr-22 Bond must be kept on file for three (3) years.  If you terminate or cancel your policy within those three years, your driving privileges will be suspended.

How do I file an SR-22 Bond in Ohio?

The easiest way to file an SR-22 certificate is electronically with the Ohio BMV.  It usually processes with 72 hours. Terminations or cancelations of the policy are also submitted electronically.  As soon as the SR-22 is filed with the BMV and the other conditions to have your driving privileges reinstated are met, you will be reissued a license.  Depending on the circumstances, your license may be restricted by an ignition interlock requirement or other condition required by the court or BMV.

Ohio OVI

In most circumstances, you will have to file an SR-22 bond if you have your license suspended due to an Ohio OVI. Ohio has strict impaired driving laws.  Whether you are found operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, you can face serious consequences.  At a minimum, you will face:

  •         3 days in jail or Driver Intervention Program (DIP)
  •         $375 to $1075 Fine
  •         License suspension

In order to get unlimited driving privileges during your suspension, you will have to install an ignition interlock device (IID).  If you have a BAC of .17% or higher, then you will face more severe penalties.

Penalties for OVI Conviction

Jail Time 3 days to 6 months 10 days to 6 months 30 days to 1 year
Fine(s) $375 to $1,075 $525 to $1625 $850 to $2,750
